Apple CEO Tim Cook isn’t known for making many mistakes, but turning down Elon Musk may turn out to be a costly one.

The Tesla boss on Tuesday revealed that he had tried to talk to Cook about buying his electric automaker back when it was hemorrhaging cash, but wasn’t even able to get a foot in the door.

“During the darkest days of the Model 3 program, I reached out to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla (for 1/10 of our current value),” Musk tweeted Tuesday. “He refused to take the meeting.”

Tesla shares are up more than 650 percent since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March, with Musk’s company now valued at more than $600 billion. It is the most valuable automaker in the world, leading No. 2 toyota by more than $350 billion.

Musk’s tweet came after a Monday report said the iPhone has set a goal of 2024 to produce a passenger vehicle — complete with its own “breakthrough” battery technology.
