A former Olympic boxer allegedly strangled his daughter to death and disposed of her body in a Staten Island park last year before fleeing to Pennsylvania and then the Middle East, authorities said Tuesday.
Kabary Salem, 52, killed Ola Salem, 25, sometime between Oct. 23, 2019, and Oct., 24, 2019, the Staten Island District Attorney’s Office announced after the dad’s arraignment on murder charges.
He then drove to Staten Island, dragged her body into Bloomingdale Park, covered her up with leaves and branches and left her there, authorities said.
The father and daughter had been in Pennsylvania, where he was buying a restaurant, authorities said. It wasn’t clear if he killed Ola there or on the way back to Staten Island.
After disposing of the body, Salem returned to Pennsylvania, before fleeing the country.
Salem is a former professional middleweight boxer from Egypt who went by the nickname “The Egyptian Magician” and who competed in the 1990s through early 2000s, including in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics. Salem killed one opponent, Randie Carver, in the ring in Kansas City in Sept. 1999 after repeatedly headbutting the doomed man, news reports from the time show.
He was eventually tracked to Kuwait, where members of the NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals Service captured him on Dec. 3. He was brought back to the city to face charges Friday.
At one point, Salem seems to have tried to throw cops off in an interview with The New York Times, claiming his daughter had complained of being followed by a vehicle.
He was charged with murder in the second degree, manslaughter in the first degree, concealment of a human corpse and strangulation. He was sent to jail with a court date of Feb. 5, 2021.
“Throughout the course of this tragic case, we had never lost hope that the alleged killer would be arrested and charged,” said District Attorney Michael McMahon. “We will continue to work tirelessly to hold this defendant accountable for the brutal act of violence he has been accused of committing against his own daughter.”
