“Courtside Karen” is taking a timeout from social media for now.
Instagram model Juliana Carlos, dubbed “Courtside Karen” by LeBron James himself, has made her account private in the wake of a spat she incited with James that went viral.
Carlos became an overnight internet sensation and the subject of countless memes after heckling James in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s Hawks-Lakers game, which resulted in her forcible removal from Atlanta’s State Farm Arena. Thousands of Instagram users quickly flooded her page, completely dominating the comment sections of a number of her recent (and not so recent) posts. She earned tens of thousands of new followers, ballooning to 83,200 at one point before going dark. Her husband, Chris Carlos, followed suit and also made his account private.
The 25-year-old escalated the situation by unleashing an expletive-laden rant on her Instagram story that evening telling her side of the story. By Tuesday afternoon, however, she pivoted her attitude and issued a mea culpa in an Instagram post.
“About last night… To say things escalated quickly at yesterday’s game is an understatement, and I want to apologize for losing my cool and removing my mask in the heat of the moment,” she wrote. “My husband is a huge sports fan and we’re passionate people, and let’s be real: sports wouldn’t be sports without a little trash-talking. What should have been a quick back-and-forth between two adults got out of hand… Did I use offensive language when I could have taken the higher road? Yes. And for these things, I take full responsibility.”
The Hawks recently became one of 10 NBA teams to allow a limited number of fans into their arena. Carlos, who resides in Atlanta, was one of four people ejected that evening and the team is investigating the incident.
Carlos’ YouTube channel, which she links to in her Instagram bio, also appears to be taken down.
