A man suspected in a string of random assaults on women at a Brooklyn subway station was arrested Tuesday and charged with a slew of hate crimes, authorities said.
Khari Covington, 29, is accused of attacking nine women in separate instances in East Williamsburg since last August, according to police.
Seven of the alleged assaults occurred in transit — mainly at the Morgan Avenue subway station — while two were committed nearby on street level, police said.
Covington targeted light-skinned women, sources said.
His arrest comes a day after police said he also assaulted a 27-year-old worker at a smoke shop on Wilson Avenue near Noll Street at about 4:50 p.m.
Police said Covington barged into the store and went behind the counter, where he punched the woman, knocked her to the ground and wrapped his arm around her neck.
Covington also allegedly tried to steal from the business but left empty-handed. The victim in the latest attack refused medical attention.
The arrest also came after one of the women recently attacked in the subway slammed the NYPD for not alerting the public of the assault pattern.
“I was stunned that this had happened so many times,” Bianca Fortis, a 32-year-old journalist, said Monday.
“I didn’t see any police stationed there. There were no flyers,” said Fortis, who was left with multiple bruises on the face, shoulder and chest when she was attacked while exiting the station on Dec. 28.
Covington was charged in the attack on Fortis.
Police had previously arrested 50-year-old Benny Watts in connection with her attack and three others at the station.
But a senior NYPD official told NBC New York that Watts was arrested in error and his charges were voided.
Covington’s alleged spree inside the Morgan Avenue station began on Nov. 11, and his most recent attack was Saturday, police said.
Most of the victims were in their 20s, according to police.
In the first reported incident related to his Tuesday arrest, Covington allegedly shoved a woman who had just finished jogging outside an apartment building on Morgan Avenue near Rock Street last August.
Covington was charged with eight counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of attempted robbery as a hate crime, according to cops.
