A Los Angeles mother was killed by her Range Rover when it unexpectedly rolled backwards and crushed her, new video shows.
The graphic footage, obtained Monday by CBS News, shows 41-year-old mother of two Shadi Farhat getting out of her 2017 Range Rover when the SUV starts to roll backwards, dragging her beneath the vehicle.
Farhat managed to get back on her feet after being run over, but immediately collapsed to the ground on Oct. 1, 2018, before dying days later. Her husband is now suing Jaguar Land Rover for a “defective gear selector” in its Range Rover, which employs a dial rather than a standard gear shift, CBS News reported.
“I lost the love of my life,” Michael Farhat told the station. “I love my best friend … Every day is a struggle. It’s a hole that’s never going to be filled inside you.”
Farhat said his wife regularly grumbled about not being able to tell which gear the Range Rover was in while operating the vehicle, ultimately leading to the deadly rollaway incident.
“She complained about it a lot,” he said. “‘I can’t tell when it’s in park, I can’t tell if it’s in reverse. I can’t tell if it’s in drive.’”
Farhat’s lawsuit against Jaguar Land Rover filed in Los Angeles County in June cited internal company documents showing that the automaker was aware of hundreds of potential unintended rollaway complaints in its vehicle outfitted with dial shifters, including 28 in the Range Rover.
“Drivers are confused and Land Rover knows that drivers are confused,” attorney Dylan Ruga told CBS News. “And this unfortunately the inevitable result of what happens when people think the car is in park and it is not.”
Ruga is representing Farhat and another woman, Gina Warsavsky, who is also suing the automaker after the SUV – which starts at $90,000 for 2020 models — ran over her right hand last month.
“I believe I put the car into park, got out of the car and my car started reversing towards and knocked me down,” Warsavsky told CBS News.
Warsavsky said she needed reconstructive surgery to mend her hand after the frightening incident.
“It was horrific,” she continued. “It was a nightmare that is forever haunting me.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration closed a four-year investigation in August into reports of unintended rollaway incidents involving Jaguar Land Rovers with dial shifters, saying it didn’t find “mechanical or electronic faults” in the vehicle while citing operating error.
The federal agency told CBS News in a statement that it’s continuing to monitor the issue and is aware of the incidents involving Farhat and Warsavsky.
Land Rover declined to comment on the lawsuits, citing pending litigation, but said in a statement that company officials are “committed to the safety” of its customers while saying they was saddened to learn of the two incidents.
The automaker has denied fault in court filings, CBS News reported.
Farhat, meanwhile, said he hopes no other family has to experience the suffering he’s endured due what he claims is a fault gear selector.
“I want to get it out there that there’s a problem with this car,” Farhat told CBS News. “I don’t want anyone else to go through this pain.”
